In his first two novels Flaubert emphasized in realistic detail the essential banality and boredom of life in the provinces and in the capital. Madame Bovary which telis the stoıy of a woman imprisoned by her middle-class surroundings is also a harsh attack by Flaubert to the moral conservatism rough manners and unsophisticated taste of the emergent middle class.
